Her brother is battling cancer. The Harding-Kerrigan flap overshadows almost everything. But U.S. luge star and flagbearer Cammy Myler said today she's excited, proud and determined to avoid distractions.

Myler, the top woman racer in U.S. luge history, was chosen Thursday to carry the American flag in Saturday's opening ceremony at the Olympics.

"I was a little surprised," she told a news conference. "It was a pretty exciting moment."

She telephoned her mother in Lake Placid, N.Y., late Thursday to report on her selection as flagbearer. She also spoke to her brother, Tim, who had cancer surgery on Christmas Eve and has been hospitalized since then.
