Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, has announced his selection of 39 candidates to the United States military academies.

"The quality of these young people is outstanding and I am pleased to offer their names to the academies as my nominations for 1989," he said.The candidates were chosen based on ACT and SAT scores, high school transcripts and extracurricular activities. Their names were then forward-ed to the academies for final selection.

Nominated to the United States Naval Academy were: Karl Garcia, Layton; Jodi Ann Hutton, Salt Lake City; Jonathan Weed LeBaron, Logan; David Matthew McIllice, Sandy; Casey Lance Moore, Lehi; Kennett Jesse Moses, Salt Lake City; Scott Robert Sargent, Salt Lake City; Paul Ochs Skeen, Ogden; Stephen William Sycuro, Salt Lake City; and Maria Teresa Tonioli, Tooele.

Nominated to the United States Air Force Academy were: Robert Steven Alles, Fruit Heights; Timothy Sean Byro, Layton; David Ian Cassette, Brigham City; Christopher Robert Clayton, Payson; Douglas Alan Cunningham, Sandy; Erin Thomas French, Washington; Christopher Lynn Hopkins, Ogden; Morgan Ray LaVake, Salt Lake City; Travis Rodnie Nichols, Nephi; and Travis Gould Roberts, Ogden.

Nominated to the United States Military Academy were: Sheryl Ann Arnold, Tooele; Darrion LaVoy Bowers, Salt Lake City; Karl Garcia, Layton; Douglas David Hanson, Layton; Darrin Joseph Howell, Salt Lake City; Kennett Jesse Moses, Salt Lake City; Cyndie Peleschka, Ogden; Jaren Keith Price, Layton; and Stephen William Sycuro, Salt Lake City.

Nominated to the United States Merchant Marine Academy were: Carl David Bendixen, Salt Lake City; Ritchie James Blake, St. George; Darrion LaVoy Bowers, Salt Lake City; Timothy Sean Byro, Layton; Paul L. Emerson, Salt Lake City; Douglas David Hanson, Layton; Darrin Joseph Howell, Salt Lake City; Cyndie Peleschka, Ogden; and Richard F. Smith, Salt Lake City.
