The frozen Cook Inlet near downtown Anchorage, Alaska, makes the prospect of a little boat outing downright comical. The vertical line of light to the left of the sun is a "sun dog," an optical phenomenon that occurs in extreme cold when sunlight shines through ice crystals suspended in the air. Sun dogs have been appearing often, and sometimes dramatically, during Alaska's extreme cold spell, reminding us, perhaps, that there is some beauty in everything.
