President Lee Teng-hui Friday signed a law that will give large bonuses to lawmakers elected in China 42 years ago who voluntarily retire, but officials said many of the aging politicians refuse to step down.

A statement said the bill, part of the ruling Nationalist Party's plan to increase the clout of native Taiwanese in the government, will take effect Monday.The elderly lawmakers, most of them Nationalists, have been frozen in office until they can return to their mainland constituencies for new elections.
