Relief supplies were airlifted Friday to some 200,000 refugees from devastating floods caused by monsoon rains that have killed 60 people in the central island of Samar, authorities said.

In Oras town in Eastern Samar province, 350 miles southeast of Manila, rescuers dug through a mountainside in search of 17 people missing and feared dead when landslides buried their homes.Monsoon rains, spawned by a lingering tropical depression and a cold front from north Asia, continued Friday and officials feared floods ravaging the nation's third largest island were widening.

The Red Cross said 35 people died, mostly victims of drowning and landslides in Eastern Samar. Officials said 200,000 people were either homeless or were needing assistance in Samar.
