Atlanta won the nod Friday as the United States entry into the international competition to host the 1996 Summer Olympics. The decision, solemnly announced by the U.S. Olympic Committee, was written dramatically on the grins of the Atlanta delegation and in the tears of the losing Minneapolis-St. Paul delegation.

The two cities were the finalists for the right to represent the United States when the International Olympic Committee picks a site for the 1996 summer games at its 1990 meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland.
