Thirty-one countries have submitted entries for consideration for best foreign language film award in the 61st annual Academy Awards competition this year.

To date, 55 countries have competed in this Oscar category since it was established in 1956. Among the submissions this year are films from the Dominican Republic, which entered only once before, Nicaragua, which had not submitted a film since 1982, and Indonesia for the second consecutive year.Each nation is invited to submit a film and that selection is made by a jury of filmmakers from that nation.
