After a candid meeting with the governor, longtime Public Service Commissioner Brent Cameron has decided to resign.

Cameron, who initially was appointed in 1981 by former Gov. Scott Matheson, a Democrat, will step down March 1.An aide to Republican Gov. Norm Bangerter said Cameron had done a good job, but a change was needed.

"One of the prerogatives of a governor is to change the D's to R's," Scruggs said, referring to the practice of replacing Democrats with Republicans.

Officials said Bangerter would announce a replacement Thursday.
