Eugene W. Petersen, 68, an employee of the Newspaper Agency Corp. for 21 years and a leader in local and national deaf organizations, died Jan. 27, 1989, in Indianapolis from injuries suffered in a automobile accident.

A native Utahn, Mr. Petersen lived and worked in Salt Lake City until 1967. He was president of the Utah Association of the Deaf for 10 years, and editor of the association's bulletin.In Indiana, he was employed by Crossroads Rehabilitation Center and Goodwill Industries, where he retired in May of 1988. In both institutions he was director of deaf services and responsible for starting programs for deaf and handicapped individuals.

Nationally he was appointed to the Powrie V. Doctor Chair of Deaf Studies at Gallaudet College for the Deaf, Washington, D.C. - the most prestigious chair at that university. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 4 in Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, where friends can call from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 3. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
