A Utah State Prison inmate pleaded guilty Friday to felony sexual abuse for raping a woman in Yellowstone National Park last August while they were fighting wildfires in the park.
Roger Lopez, 33, Layton, entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Clarence Brimmer as part of a plea agreement under which Utah prison officials agreed to seek no sanctions against the inmate.
Lopez was a member of a 20-man firefighting crew from the prison sent to help battle the Yelowstone fires. Officials said the victim was a 20-year-old Utah woman working on a Job corps firefighting crew in the park.
Lopez was indicted by a federal grand jury in Cheyenne on a charge of aggravated sexual assault, which carries a possible penatly of up to life in prison. That charge was dropped in exchange for his guilty plea on the lesser count.
