A judge Wednesday acquitted a prominent supporter of Ferdinand Marcos of rebellion, saying his takeover of a provincial government during a 1987 coup attempt against President Corazon Aquino was not violent enough to merit conviction.

But Judge Maximiano Asuncion sentenced Orlando Dulay to 10 months in prison and fined him the equivalent of $50 for trying to strangle the governor and holding other officials and employees of Quirino province during the Aug. 28, 1987 coup attempt, in which 53 people were killed in Manila.
