Mayors from six cities on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley met with Gov. Norm Bangerter on Monday to lobby for more money to build the West Valley Highway.
Bangerter included $12 million in his budget recommendation for the project, which would connect 21st South with I-15 near the state prison by running north to south along 40th West. Mayors from West Valley City, West Jordan, South Jordan, Draper, Riverton, Bluffdale and Salt Lake County Commission Chairman Mike Stewart say they want $25 million to begin construction this year.Senate Majority Whip Dix McMullen, R-Salt Lake, and Rep. Michael Waddoups, R-Salt Lake, will try to persuade lawmakers to appropriate the money. "If you've ever driven through the old Granger area at 5 o'clock at night, you understand the need for this," said West Valley Mayor Brent Anderson.
