A Washington City lymphologist charged with two felony counts of practicing medicine without a license has decided to handle his own legal defense.

Public defender J. MacArthur Wright turned over discovery papers at the request of the defendant, Thomas H. Smith, 46.Deputy Washington County Attorney Brent Rowe said Smith also has filed a motion in 5th Circuit Court for return of items not used by the prosecution as evidence and a motion for dismissal of the case.

Smith also requested a transcript of any court hearings, but the judge said he was only entitled if he paid for them. However, a tape of court proceedings is available, he said.

Smith was arraigned Dec. 15, following undercover operations by the Washington County sheriff's department. The two third-degree felony counts stem from incidents on Nov. 25 and Dec. 14.
