Chicago, city of the big shoulders, apparently is a city of big smiles as well.

Chicago is the most well-mannered city in the United States, according to a survey of 750 of the nation's top executives.Following Chicago in the fifth annual survey by the Marjabelle Young Stewart Etiquette Corp. were Seattle; New York; Pittsburgh, last year's top city; Indianapolis; Denver; Charleston, S.C.; Boston; Peoria, Ill.; and Dallas.

Company founder Marjabelle Young Stewart said the survey is based on how business travelers perceive the people they deal with in individual cities.

She said cities that have recognized the importance of manners to their economy have taken such steps as appointing protocol officers and holding seminars for those people who will be representing the city.
