Two Denver Nuggets who were displeased with their team managers over play and pay - Calvin Natt and Jay Vincent - will have an opportunity to change that by playing for the San Antonio Spurs, after the NBA teams announced a trade on Thursday.
Natt and Vincent were traded for David Greenwood and Darwin Cook. Pete Babcock, the Nuggets' president, said Vincent was unhappy with his contract and Natt thought he would be playing more.Greenwood, a 6-foot-9 forward in his 10th year in the National Basketball Association, and Cook, a 6-3 guard who is an eight-year veteran, were scheduled to join the Nuggets on Friday, said Babcock.
He said Greenwood should help the Nuggets' inside game. Both players are attractive to the Nuggets, said Babcock, because they become free agents at the end of this season and their futures will depend on their performance this season.
Natt, 32, a nine-year veteran who had played for the Nuggets four years, had been plagued by knee problems and missed the entire 1986-87 season after rupturing a heel cord in the season's first game.
Since recovering from that injury, Natt, who at one time was the Nuggets' second-leading scorer, has battled knee problems and lobbied for more playing time.
Last week, Natt said he wanted to play more or to be sent to another team. Coach Doug Moe said that because of Natt's knee problems, his request for more playing time could not be granted.
Vincent, 29, a seven-year NBA veteran, came to the Nuggets last season with Michael Adams in a trade with the Washington Bullets. Injuries and a dispute over renegotiating his contract kept Vincent out of the lineup for all but five games this season. He played in the team's last three games, starting on Tuesday night at New Jersey, where he scored a season-high 12 points.
Greenwood, 31, was drafted into the NBA in 1979 by the Chicago Bulls and joined the Spurs in 1985 in a trade for George Gervin. In his 694 regular-season NBA games he has averaged 11.4 points and 8.7 rebounds. This season, he has averaged 7.7 points and 6.1 rebounds in 38 games.
