A 51-year-old Layton man pleaded not guilty this week in 2nd District Court to a first-degree felony charge of rape of a child.

Paul E. Hawkins, 101 Mill Road, pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for trial Feb. 22.Hawkins, formerly of Kaysville, is charged with having sexual intercourse with a girl under 14 on Aug. 2, 1988.

The charge carries a prison term of five years to life with a minimum mandatory term of 5, 10, or 15 years.

Defense attorney Steven Vanderlinden told Judge Douglas L. Cornaby that a plea negotiation is being worked out with the Davis County Attorney's office and that a Feb. 14 pretrial hearing date has been set.
