A freighter with 17 South Korean crewmen aboard collided with a Singaporean tanker off western Japan and presumably sank, the Maritime Safety Agency said Friday.

No survivors from the freighter have been found despite an extensive air and sea search, said a spokesman for the agency in Kitakyushu on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu. The tanker was damaged but did not sink, the agency spokesman said.An empty life raft bearing the name of the Panamanian-registered freighter Catherin Rose washed ashore Friday near the scene of the collision, the spokesman said.
