Super Bowl XXIII threw the opposition for a loss and gave NBC a lopsided victory in last week's rating contest, it was reported Tuesday.

The San Francisco 49ers may have won a squeaker over the Cincinnati Bengals, but their game on NBC whomped the entertainment shows on CBS and ABC.The game was by far the most-watched show of the week. It intruded almost two hours into Sunday prime time with a 43.5 rating and a 68 share. That means approximately 39,324,000 households in the United States watched at least part of that football game.

The ratings were up 4 percent over last year's Super Bowl XXII, when ABC's broadcast of the Denver-Washington game earned a 41.9 rating and a 62 share, according to NBC spokesman Matt Messina.

The nine-minute post game show took second place in the ratings, scoring a 32.5 rating and a 49 share.

NBC followed the Super Bowl with part one of "Brotherhood of the Rose," a male audience-oriented thriller that came in third for the week.

To counterprogram in their Sunday movie slots, CBS tried a Barbara Cartland historical romance, "The Lady and the Highwayman," and ABC came up with the theatrical movie, "Heaven Can Wait." The two Sunday movies tied for 51st.

The preview showing of NBC's new series, "Nightingales," came in 23rd for the week in the slot usually reserved for "Empty Nest" and "Hunter." A revamped version of the show NBC tried last year goes on the air in its regular, less hospitable time slot Wednesday, Jan. 25, 10-11 p.m. Eastern time.

A two-hour version of NBC's new "Father Dowling" series came in 33rd for the week, which is only moderately good but better than NBC usually scores on Friday nights these days. "Father Dowling" begins its regular run Jan. 27, 8-9 p.m. Eastern time.

"Dolphin Cove," the new CBS series starring Frank Converse and two Australian dolphins, ranked 49th. It came in a respectable second in its time period, which was won by the Bob Hope Super Bowl special.

NBC won the week with a 20.0 rating and a 32 share. ABC and CBS tied for second, each with a 12.0 rating and 19 share.

In the television season to date, NBC claims it is 18 weeks old and ABC and CBS say it began on Oct. 24.

In the NBC version, NBC leads with a 16.1 rating and a 26 share. ABC is second with a 13.0 rating and a 21 share and CBS comes in last with a 12.2 rating and a 20 share.

In the alternative count, NBC wins with a 15.6 rating and a 25 share, ABC has a 13.0 rating and a 21 share and CBS a 12.4 rating and a 20 share.

In the evening news category, the ratings race was almost a three-way tie. ABC's "World News Tonight" with Peter Jennings came in first with an 11.7 rating and a 20 share. CBS was a tenth of a ratings point behind with an 11.6 rating and a 20 share, and NBC was right behind with an 11.5 rating and a 20 share.
