The director and resident professor of chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain will speak to Brigham Young University students Jan. 31 as part of the University Forum series.

John M. Thomas will discuss "The Poetry of Science," at 11 a.m. in the Marriott Center. It will be broadcast live on KBYU-FM, 88.9, and on KBYU-TV, Channel 11, and will be repeated on television Feb. 5 at 6 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.The lecture will illustrate some ways scientists have conveyed their awe and appreciation of the beauty of natural phenomena. Thomas also will discuss poetic aspects of experimental science, in non-technical terms, through man's thoughts on the architecture of crystals.

Before his appointment to the Royal Institution, Thomas was head of the department of physical chemistry and fellow of King's College at the University of Cambridge.
