A quiet volunteer with the City County Health Department is doing her part to make sure that babies and mothers are healthy.

Each year for the past five, Evonna Montalvo has adopted a prenatal patient in need, providing food, transportation and clothing for the mother-to-be. According to Iliana Merrill, nursing supervisor in the department, Montalvo does this on her own time, in addition to her paid position as a health aide with the Health Department."She has a knack for helping others," Merrill said. "She once saw a family in the clinic who had a very sick child. Noticing the family had no support system and did not have the money to buy a prescription, she found their home address and visited them. She obtained the prescription from them, had it filled and returned with the needed medication. She did all this without drawing attention to herself."
