Three attackers raked a house northeast of Colombo with machine-gun fire, killing an opposition candidate for parliament and five other people, military officials said Thursday.

Nissanka Dharmatilleke was the 10th opposition candidate for Feb. 15 parliamentary elections to be killed since nominations closed for the balloting 20 days ago.The military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to say who might have killed the 42-year-old Dharmatilleke.

Dharmatilleke belonged to the United Socialist Alliance, a leftist coalition whose candidate Ossie Abeyegoonesekera finished a distant third in last month's presidential election.
