Members of the Utah Air National Guard hoist the flag at dedication ceremonies Saturday morning for the new flagpole at the Midvalley LDS Stake Center in Sandy. The flag, which flew over the nation's capitol on Christmas Day, was obtained by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Hatch donated the flag to the stake center after he learned that 485 Primary children raised $1,058.47 during a six-week period. The money was used to pay for the new flagpole. "We weren't even thinking about having a flagpole," said Ken Kraudy, stake president. "You don't have to have them on chapels necessarily." A stake leader suggested letting the Primary children raise the money. "At first the adults weren't too sure - `another thing we have to do,' " he said. "But the kids just took hold of it and went." Jill Peterson, 5, raised her $2 contribution by making Thanksgiving place mats and bookmarks for her family. Her older sister, Amy, 10, broke open her piggy bank to get her donation.
