A former Utah Transit Authority bus driver says in a racial discrimination suit that he was fired last year because he was falsely accused of assaulting a woman and detaining her against her will.

The U.S. District Court suit by Larry Smith says he was fired on June 9, 1987, after an "investigation" that was not as complete as it should have been. The UTA treated him less fairly than it would have a white driver, the suit claims. On Oct. 6, 1987, a court found him not guilty, the suit adds. Smith is asking for reinstatement, back pay, plus punitive damages to be determined later.
