San Jose State officials said this week that 10 basketball players who quit the team Jan. 18 would continue to receive their scholarships during the spring semester that begins Thurs-day.
"San Jose State University feels the obligation to fulfill its current scholarship commitment to these student-athletes despite their group decision to leave the team," said Randy Hoffman, the school's sports director.NCAA legislation gives a school the option to end aid when an athlete quits a team.
The players demanded the firing of Coach Bill Berry, accusing him of abusing them verbally and physically. School officials said that they would not dismiss the coach in mid-season.
The departed players have hired attorney Melvin Belli and met with the famed lawyer last weekend.
