The Interior Department this week announced appointment of Moab river outfitter Sheri Griffith to the National Public ands Advisory Council.
Griffith, 36, received formal notice Monday from Interior Secretary Donald Hodel of her appointment to a three-year term on the board starting Jan. 13. The 21-member board acts in an advisory capacity to the interior secretary and the director of the Bureau of Land Management.Griffith said she applied for a seat on the board two years ago and was recommended by Rep. Howard C. Nielson, R-Utah, and assistant interior secretary Steven Griles. "The recommendation was on the basis that no one on the board represents recreation, and no one represents small business interests," she said.
A Colorado native, Griffith moved to Moab from Grand Junction in 1981 and formed her own river guide company, Griffith River Expeditions. This year she began a second two-year term as president of the Western River Guides Association, representing 1,000 outfitters in 12 Western states.
