An 11-year-old Cottonwood Heights boy engaged law officers in a high-speed chase on I-15 early Tuesday and damaged a patrol car before he was stopped near 33rd South.
Sandy patrol officer Scott Lance tried to pull over a van at 90th South and State about 6:30 a.m., after hearing a report from the Salt Lake County sheriff's department about a joy rider they were attempting to locate. With lights and siren blaring, the officer chased the van south to 106th South where the driver turned east and then headed north on I-15, said Sandy police Sgt. Jon Thompson. Lance then notified the Utah Highway Patrol as the northbound chase ensued at speeds up to 80 mph.
"They were able to get the van boxed in with (patrol) vehicles and slowed it down," Thompson said. The van clipped an open door on a UHP car when the rolling roadblock was almost stopped near the 33rd South exit. The officers then pulled the van off the freeway where they began to quiz the driver about his early morning venture in the family van.
