A consumer group's allegation that 1.1 million Cadillacs may be prone to sudden acceleration runs counter to the findings of earlier government investigations, General Motors Corp. says.

The Center for Auto Safety, in a petition filed Monday with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, asked the agency to order the recall of Cadillacs with HT-4100 4.1-liter V8 engines and made from 1982 through 1988.GM responded that a 1986 NHTSA investigation of GM vehicles, including Cadillacs, failed to find "a common design flaw or manufacturing defect that could be a root cause for these unwanted acceleration incidents."
