Chief U.N. negotiator Jan Eliasson arrived in Tehran early Tuesday in a bid to rekindle stalled Iran-Iraq peace talks, Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency reported. IRNA said Eliasson arrived in Tehran a few minutes after midnight and was greeted at Mehrabad Airport by Iranian Foreign Ministry officials.

In a related development, Iraq Monday released 131 sick, wounded and elderly Iranian prisoners of war in an apparent gesture of goodwill timed to coincide with Eliasson's visit.
