Defending national champion Utah took a four-point lead over Wyoming after Friday's opening session of nordic competition in the Wyoming Invitational.

The University of Colorado in third followed by New Mexico.Utah's Thomas Lium won the 14-kilometer men's race in 35:59. Wyoming's Dag Bjorndal was the Cowboys' top finisher, coming home third in 36:04.

In the women's 7-kilometer race, Utah's Ann Kari Aas covered the course in 20:46. Wyoming's top finisher, Katarina Forsberg, finished fourth in 21:45.
