David M. Thomas, a teacher in Dee Elementary School, has won a national contest sponsored by a professional journal. His article on the Dee school's "I Can Write!" project was honored and will be printed by Computers in Schools, a journal that documents and promotes computer use.
The Ogden elementary school involves every fourth grade student in a month of keyboarding instruction. They then spend 30 minutes every day using Apple IIe microcomputers and word processing software to do written assignments.Comparisons of the Dee students with others in the area showed that the computer-trained children had more improvement in writing ability.
Thomas has been employed in the Ogden District for 15 years, including nine at Dee. He is chairman of the Ogden District Elementary Computer Curriculum Committee and is an independent consultant in educational computer applications.
