A cargo ship carrying logs from Malaysia to South Korea caught fire, and six of its 21 crew members were seriously burned trying to put out the flames, officials said Saturday.

Lt. Francisco Mendoza, a Coast Guard spokesman, said the 3,768-ton Cattleya issued a distress call Thursday while it was in the Luzon Sea off Zambales province, about 100 miles of Manila.Eduardo Mendoza, operations manager of the ship's local agent, said reports from crew members indicated the fire started in the ship's engine room.

The 21 Korean crew members managed to put out the fire but six of them were seriously burned, he said.
