Fire ripped through a crowded residential district in Manila Thursday, destroying 800 houses and leaving more than 9,000 people homeless, police said.

Five people, including two firemen, were injured in the four-hour blaze that swept through Pandacan district Thursday but spared a nearby oil depot. Four looters were arrested.Fed by a strong afternoon breeze, the fire leveled 800 houses, mostly shanties along a railroad track in Pandacan. Some 9,600 people in 1,600 families were left homeless, police said.
