Mozambican rebels making a border raid shot and killed seven people - five of them children - who were fleeing into the bush, police said.

The rebels attacked Mbadza village in the northeast, about six miles from the border with neighboring Mozambique, on Tuesday, a police spokesman said. The children ranged in age from 5 to 13, said the spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Right-wing Mozambican rebels who are fighting the Mozambican government frequently cross into Zimbabwe to steal food and supplies. Scores of Zimbabwean civilians have been killed in such raids.
