A panel broke off the right wing of a Boeing 757 after takeoff, forcing the Eastern Airlines flight to return to Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.

No one was injured, said Eastern spokesman Robin Matell in Miami. The plane left Atlanta and was near Birmingham, Ala., en route to Los Angeles, when the pilot noticed the problem, a spokesman said.

"It was climbing at 28,000 feet and the captain felt a shudder and heard a noise," said Matell.
