The Boston Celtics may be on the verge of acquiring rookie Jose Ortiz from the Utah Jazz, it was learned Wednesday.
A source in Utah said Boston was interested in the 6-foot-10 Jazz rookie, who is seeing little playing time. Whether it would be strictly a deal for Ortiz, or one that would mushroom into something larger, could not be determined. The Jazz apparently would be willing to unload Ortiz and his reported $275,000 salary if Eric White pans out in his second, 10-day contract.
The Celtics could find a way to accommodate Ortiz if the deal involves only a draft choice. Even though they are over the salary cap, the Celtics still have some maneuverability. Because of the departures of Fred Roberts, Artis Gilmore and Bill Walton, they have three slots for another player. The Celtics might be able to accommodate Ortiz and his salary with two of those slots.
Boston probably will not give up its No. 1 pick for Ortiz, so Utah would have to settle for a second rounder at least.
