The driver of a car that rammed a train at the intersection of 90th South and Old Bingham Highway about 6:15 a.m. Thursday escaped with only minor injuries.

John Wilde, 20, 9484 Braenaer Circle, South Jordan, was treated and released from Holy Cross Jordan Valley Hospital after he walked away from the accident, which was witnessed by a West Jordan police officer who was on his way to work."I was three or four cars behind (Wilde) and saw sparks," said officer Charles Kirby. "The tail lights went out - I figured out what happened when I got up there."

Kirby, who stayed to investigate the accident, said the train engine was well past the intersection and Wilde's car rammed one of the rail cars as it crossed the road. "He walked away, I don't know how," Kirby said.

There was no fog in the area but it was still dark at the time of the accident, Kirby said. A Denver & Rio Grande representative said the freight train was headed toward West Valley City.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation later Thursday.
