The birth of quadruplets and quintuplets conceived outside the womb occurred at the same hospital within 24 hours ending Thursday.

Both mothers, in their 30s, were reported in good condition at King Edward Memorial Women's Hospital and all nine babies were described as in "very good" condition.Cheryl Pavlenko, of Perth, Western Australia, gave birth to four girls and one boy, weighing between 1.7 pounds and 2.8 pounds, during a 12-hour period overnight Wednesday and early Thursday, the hospital said.

That followed the birth of three boys and one girl, weighing between 3.3 pounds and 4.1 pounds, to Susan Rennie, also of Perth.

Dr. John Yovich, of Perth's Pivet Medical Centre, said the pregnancies were a result of a new procedure, known as transcervical test, which was developed at Pivet.
