The Alpine School District has adopted a program to give teenagers the emotional strength to avoid alcohol and drugs, district officials say.
The board decided the Quest Program, which is designed for students age 10 to 14, will be placed in the district's junior high schools, said Gary Keetch, Alpine school administrator."Other programs that have focused on drug awareness, on a description of the harmful effects of drugs, have not proven very effective in this important battle. But this approach attacks the causes of drug abuse: poor self-image, peer pressure and unwise decision making," Keetch said.
The program was tried successfully on a pilot basis last year at American Fork Junior High. It focuses on helping students develop self-discipline, responsibility and good judgment.
