A group of Vietnam War veterans is asking the Legislature for $116,000 to buy 80 tons of granite needed for a memorial to Utah's Vietnam War dead that supporters hope to unveil on the Capitol grounds on Veterans Day.

The granite would form a wall around a bronze statue of a soldier carrying his fallen comrade's rifle. On the wall would be inscribed the names of the 364 Utahns who died in the Vietnam War.David Gardner told senators during a Tuesday caucus meeting that memorial fund-raisers had collected about $114,000 over the past 31/2-years from local companies, including Morton Thiokol, Hercules and Geneva Steel.
