A Salt Lake man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he was hit while standing near his car parked in the emergency lane of I-15, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.

Turrel Craig Mecham, 31, originally of Idaho Falls, was at the rear of his car, parked in the right-hand emergency lane near First South, when he was struck by a small northbound car driven by Joseph Darrell Maestas, 17, Salt Lake City, said Trooper Robert Humphrey.Mecham was crushed and pinned between the two cars, which were forced into traffic. A third car, driven by Samuel Ross, 62, Bountiful, struck the first two cars.

Mecham probably died at the scene, Humphrey said.

Ross and a passenger were not injured in the accident, which occurred about 2:20 p.m.

Anthony Montoya, 16, and Anthony Winfrey, who were passengers in the car driven by Maestas, were in fair condition Wednesday at University Hospital and LDS Hospital, respectively.

Maestas, whose vehicle witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed, was treated at University Hospital then released.

Humphrey said no citations were issued but the accident will be reviewed by the Salt Lake County attorney's office.
