A train slammed into a school bus south of the capital of Colombo Tuesday, killing about 40 people, many of them children, police officials said.

The train struck the school bus at an unattended level crossing in the town of Ahungalla, 48 miles south of Colombo, the officials said. The train was traveling from Kalutara to Galle, both south of Colombo.The officials said about 40 people were killed in the crash, many of them children, and at least 55 other people were injured, nearly half of them in critical condition.
