The father of Texas Sen. Lloyd Bentsen was killed in an automobile collision Tuesday when he apparently pulled into the path of an oncoming car on a rural road in South Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Lloyd Bentsen Sr., 92, whose estate is in Mission, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the other car were injured and taken to a hospital in Mission.According to DPS spokesman Mike Cox, Bentsen, who was alone in the car, was heading north on Farm to Market Road 494. He stopped briefly at a stop sign and then attempted to cross State Highway 107 and was broadsided on the passenger side.

Bentsen founded a sprawling farming and real estate business in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. His son, Lloyd Jr., has been a longtime senator from Texas and was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for vice president during the past election.

The elder Bentsen campaigned for his son and Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis and made an appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, Ga.
