Despite the wintery weather and what most Utahns are muttering behind their wool scarves, this IS weather fit for a dog - a sled dog.

The annual Atta Boy Heber Valley Classic Sled Dog Race will be held Jan. 28-29, sarting at 10 a.m. on the Wasatch Mountain State Park Golf Course, near Midway.Racers from six Western states will compete for $3,000 in prize money in the eight-, six-, and four-dog events and trophies in the three-dog novice class.

Members of American Rescue Dogs also will attend, presenting search and rescue demonstrations both days between sprint racing events. A weight pulling competition will be held after the races Saturday afternoon. No admission is charged for any event.

The race is expected to attract up to 50 top sled dog racing teams from around the West. After the Heber race the circuit moves on successive weekends to Leadville, Granby and Waldon, Colo., completing competition Feb. 25-26 in Jackson, Wyo.

Teams from six Western states will compete in three race classes over the final weekend, running for cash and points toward the International Sled Dog Racing Association gold, silver and bronze medal placings.
