A Texas man was charged Friday with cashing a check forged on the account of an elderly man who was found beaten to death.
Fredrick Germanto, 26, Corpus Christi, was charged with two felony counts of forgery. The man, who is a transient, attempted to pass a check Jan. 9 on the account of Gilbert Lisonbee, 85, 2632 S. Green St., the probable cause statement said.
Lisonbee was found dead in home at 2:30 p.m. the same day, about two hours after Germanto tried to cash the $273 check at Check-Mart.
The defendant then went to Valley Bank, Second S. State, where payment was made on the check, the court document said.
An autopsy on Lisonbee determined the victim was bludgeoned to death. The man's checkbook and wallet were found by a citizen near 33rd South and Highland Drive, Salt Lake police said.
