Flames triggered by a kerosene heater placed too close to a couch destroyed a living room and caused $4,000 to $5,000 in damage to the rest of a five-room house Monday evening, Salt Lake Fire Battalion Chief Jim Kleine said.

Firemen responded to the blaze at 1236 W. Fourth South at 5:14 p.m. with two engines and a ladder truck and had the fire under control by 5:21 p.m. No injuries were reported, Kleine said.
