Six people were killed at an Alpine ski resort Friday when the cable car they were riding snapped off its line and plunged more than 330 feet into a ravine, firefighters said.

The accident happened near the resort of Vaujany in the Alpe d'Huez area 25 miles southeast of Grenoble. Police, firemen and mountain rescue teams raced to the scene but were hampered by the rugged terrain.Local authorities said the six were French technicians working for a tourist company that recently had set up the cable car link, which was not yet open to the public.

Police said they did not know why the car snapped off the cable.
