A school van slid on a patch of ice Friday, crashed into a utility pole and flipped, killing the driver and injuring 13 special needs students and their supervisor, police said.

Police said the unidentified female driver lost control of the van at 8:30 a.m. and fell out when it struck the pole and was crushed when it rolled over on her.A student, John Paul Kozikowski, was admitted to the intensive care unit of Holyoke Hospital in stable condition, said hospital spokesman Kevin O'Hara.

The supervisor, not identified by police, and the other students were treated for minor injuries at four area hospitals and released, hospital officials said.
