Two young men snowmobiling on an upstate New York lake were killed Friday in a head-on collision, police said.

Police in the town of Webb, 8 miles east of Old Forge in the Adirondack Mountains, said Robert Schoenhaar Jr., 18, of Jamesport, N.Y., and Scott Hooghkirk, 18, of Aquebogue, N.Y., died in the crash about 1 a.m.The two friends, on a winter vacation trip with three high school buddies, were snowmobiling on Fourth Lake when their machines collided, Webb police dispatcher Carol Crowfut said.

Crowfut said both were wearing helmets, but both died of massive skull fractures. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
