Quarterback Boomer Esiason, who led the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl, was named Most Valuable Player by the Professional Football Writers Association.

Esiason received 33 percent of the writers' vote, while San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig was runner-up with 19 percent. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham was third with 15 percent, followed by linebacker Mike Singletary of the Chicago Bears with 11 percent.
