In a final move before wrecking balls tear into the Salt Palace, Salt Lake County officials have given back the arena's name.

County commissioners presented the Acord family with a large plaque Monday that had been fastened hear the doors to Acord Arena. The arena was named in 1980 im memory of Thayne and lorraine Acord. Thayne co-owned the golden Eagles hockey team and was one of the people involved in construction of the arena in the 1960s. The two were murdered in their home."We want to recognize the contribution the Acord family has made to this community," Commission Chairman Jim Bradley said during a brief ceremony.

The county is destroying the arena to make room for a larger convention center. Officials also plan to return the arena's organ to Sherry Wilson, whose parents donated it in 1969.
